Mike Dunn
It is very sad to report that Mike Dunn, a former County player, died yesterday (17th March). He had suffered a stroke and had been living in a care home for three years.
Mike made his debut for the County in 1969 soon after he came south to Hertfordshire from Yorkshire. In that season he took 21 wickets in five matches including 6 for 34 against Norfolk which were his best career figures for the County. His best season was in 1975 when the County won the Championship. He took 23 wickets (ave 12.30) including match figures of 9 for 65 in the challenge match against Berkshire which the County won by 239 runs., as well averaging 41.75 with the bat. The following year he was part of the side which beat Essex in the 2nd Round of the Gillette Cup at Hitchin. In his final season (1979) he took another 13 wickets including match figures of 9 for 35 against Buckinghamshire at Hertford. His career record shows that in 44 championship matches he took 122 wickets (ave. 18.91).
Playing for the County was not his only contribution to Hertfordshire cricket. He was an excellent coach, the head coach of the Indoor Cricket School at Hatfield, and was responsible for various junior representative sides until he finally retired in 2001 after 34 years involvement with Hertfordshire Cricket. I received the following message from a member – “Personally I feel very fortunate to have met Mike and I will always be grateful for the impact he had on my son’s cricketing journey. It’s extraordinary to think of the influence he had on so many young cricketers. The passing of a legend”.
Mike’s contribution to Hertfordshire Cricket was recognised in 2004 by his election as a Vice-President. We send our condolences and best wishes to Hazel at this difficult time.
